U.S. tariffs on Mexico have been “paused for a month,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced after speaking with President Donald Trump. Sheinbaum confirmed Mexico will deploy 10,000 National Guard troops to reinforce the U.S.-Mexico border immediately. Trump also confirmed the troop deployment, emphasizing efforts to curb fentanyl and illegal migration. Trump did not mention preventing weapon trafficking into Mexico, as mentioned by Sheinbaum. The tariffs on Canada remain, with Trump expected to speak with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trump also named a U.S. negotiating team, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, to work on a permanent deal with Mexico. Sheinbaum, who became president in October 2024, expressed her desire for the tariffs to be paused “forever,” though Trump agreed to pause them for one month.
